Abstract:
Innovative research regarding the new multifunctional materials for the enhanced antimicrobial activity goes in favor of the development of layered structures which consist of clays, specific polymers, and metallic nanoparticles (NPs). Such novel materials, namely hybrid (nano-based), proved to have a significant efficiency toward gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922) which is based on the synergistic effect of material constituents. The role of the clay is to serve as a host for metallic nanoparticles, while polymer addition proved to serve against NP agglomeration, but also as a reducing agent. The focus of this research is alumosilicate mineral, pyrophyllite whose structure was modified by silver (AgNP) and zinc (ZnNP) nanoparticles dispersed in the polymeric matrix, polyvinyl-pyrrolidone (PVP). The aim of this research is to monitor and have insight into the kinetics of AgNP and ZnNP. Firstly, their kinetics is very important since it is crucial for the antibacterial efficiency of material, and secondly, the NP migration is related to human health issues considering the still unknown risks rising from NPs and toxicological hazards. The toxic effects of NPs are based preferably on their concentration and the time of exposure. The release of AgNP and ZnNP was monitored in the following time intervals: 7, 14, 21, 28 and 40 days and it was concluded that kinetics of AgNP and ZnNP obeys first-order kinetics, with the migration of AgNP and ZnNP not exceeding 10%.
