MODELING OF MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF CERAMIC REINFORCED WITH IRON PARTICLES FOR WATER PURIFICATION SYSTEMS

Abstract:
New developments in membrane technologies for water purification systems showed great possibilities by using composites with different reinforcements, as well as novel ceramic based membranes with porous structures, functionalized by various particles, such as iron oxides. However, there are several issues pertaining to the use of ceramic filters. Beside very good properties, such as chemical and thermal stability, brittleness is one of the issues, as well as the cost of production and maintenance. Mechanical properties of these new material structures need further study, in order to enable better design from aspects of long-term functionality whereas fracture behaviour is very important. This paper presents some insights into the state of development of ceramic filters incorporated with iron oxide particles aiming to improve sludge behaviour (sedimentation and dewatering). Possibilities to use these membranes for ultrafiltration and filtration of organic and chemicals are also enlightened. Mechanical behaviour of porous structures is studied by using finite element (FE) analysis with linear and nonlinear static analysis. Numerical modeling and simulation of damage behaviour showed the directions for adequate design of material structures, from aspects of mechanical stability. Creation of proper porous geometry for numerical models is of the utmost importance due to its influence on numerical results. Structural modeling is presented based on Voronoi Tessellation. The porous structure was subjected to uniaxial compression and investigated from aspects of inelastic deformation and corresponding von Mises stresses. Most of the strain usually occurs at the central area of the connecting ligament due to the yielding and instability of the ligaments oriented in the longitudinal direction, parallel to the loading direction.
