Abstract:
The aim of endodontic treatment is complete debridement of the root canal system and its three-dimensional obturation. Because of the complex root canal anatomy, the success of endodontic treatment is very difficult, thus it is necessary to find a suitable obturation material that satisfies all the requirements. The ideal obturation material should seal root canal hermetically and block any communication between the root canal system and surrounding tissues; it should be non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, i.e. biocompatible, and insoluble in tissue fluids and dimensionally stable. Historically, the “gold standard” and the material of choice for the root canal obturation was gutta-percha, which is used together with sealers i.e. pastes for obturation. Gutta-percha does not achieve an optimal adhesion to the dentine of the root canal, resulting in the absence of hermetic sealing. However, disadvantages of gutta-percha have led to the development of new materials. The development of adhesive technologies in dentistry have enabled the use of adhesive systems in endodontics. One of the newer systems for obturation is Resilon, thermoplastic synthetic obturation material. Resilon is introduced as a system, composed of primers, sealers and cones. The Resilon cone consists of polycarbonate, which is a biodegradable aliphatic polyester with filler particles (glass, bismuth oxychloride and barium sulphate). Physical properties, radio-opacity and melting point of the Resilon are relatively similar to gutta-percha, but with higher thermoplasticity. Many studies have shown less degree of micro-leakage in Resilon systems, which may indicate an improvement in the successful obturation compared to the “gold standard”, gutta–percha.
