Monte Carlo study of electron transport in helically coiled carbon nanotubes

Abstract:
We investigate stationary electrical transport properties of semiconducting helically coiled (HCCNT) and straight (SWCNT) carbon nanotubes.Time dependent perturbation theory associated with the line group symmetry are utilized in calculation of electron-phonon coupling strength within the tight binding scheme. All selection rules as well as energy conservation relations are taken into account. Scattering rate is calculated for each electronic state of the conduction band by summing contributions of all possible individual relaxation channels. Ensemble Monte Carlo algorithm is applied in charge transport simulation wherein electron free flight time and scattering mechanism are determined stochastically using scattering rates data. Our calculated drift velocity dependence on applied electric field for very long semiconducting SWCNT is in a good agreement with the previously reported measurements and theoretical predictions. Significant differences of intrinsic transport properties between helically coiled and straight carbon nanotubes are obtained. We found lower electron drift velocity of HCCNTs in comparison with SWCNT. Still, due to the highelasticity and large contribution of electron scattering on LA phonons, HCCNTs show potential for electromechanical system applications.
